• A "Declaration of Nullity" (commonly called an annulment) is a used to describe a marriage that after investigation by a Church Tribunal, although originally thought to be valid, actually fell short of at least one of the essential elements required for a binding union.  If the investigation reveals this lack of the elements, the Tribunal issues a “declaration of nullity”.
